The most common call we get is the disposal that hums but won’t spin. That sound means the motor is getting power while the flywheel is stuck, usually from a bone, a fruit pit, or a shard of glass wedged against the grind ring. Running it in that state for more than a few seconds trips the internal overload and can burn out the motor. The fix is almost always mechanical: cut the power at the switch, free the jam, and press the red reset button on the underside of the unit. If the reset keeps popping or the motor stays silent, the wiring or the motor itself is the likely culprit, and that is worth a professional look before you replace anything.

Signs your disposal needs attention

Keep a new disposal running longer

Disposals grind food; they are not a trash can. Keep grease, oil, and fat out of the drain, since they cool and coat the pipe. Skip fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke, starchy peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and bones, all of which either wrap the impeller or build up in the trap. Run cold water before, during, and for a few seconds after each use, and grind a little citrus peel now and then to keep odors down.
